Google's acquisitions and patents support the suggestion that there's phone work going on. Now that Apple's iPhone has passed from anticipation to release, talk of a Google mobile phone has taken its place as a favourite online fixation. The latest whisper comes from Rediff, an IT publication with offices in the United States and India, which claims that the Google phone, or Gphone, will be released within two weeks in India. Get ready for the next bout of xPhone madness. A HTC insider sent us a tip this weekend about an upcoming gPhone coming out of Taiwan that should launch Q1 2008. Google is currently assessing over twenty HTC models and refining its final handset design and will create a special version of Google Maps, compatible with built-in GPS, and compatibility with Gmail and the calendar app. There is also some talk that Samsung will be releasing gPhone handsets as well, but that has not been confirmed. If done right, the Gphone and not the iPhone will be the one to change the face of the wireless industry. Apple’s iPhone, at least in its initial release, has not upended the wireless industry, particularly in the United States, as much as hoped. The iPhone certainly has pushed the cell phone envelope a bit further, and it hints at what’s to come, but so far the iPhone is still playing by the rules. Join discussion...
